TW: Anti-LGBT violence and hate crimes.
A gay man in New York was fatally shot in the head this weekend, marking the latest in a slew of homophobic attacks in the area.
The suspect allegedly berated the victim with anti-gay slurs before shooting him around midnight in the West Village. Authorities say they consider the incident a hate crime, and not the first homophobic incident to take place in New York this month:
The case follows an alleged attack on another gay man just outside of another popular New York hotspot. ABC 7 reports that the victim, who was not identified, was coming out of the West Village gay bar Pieces when he was attacked by two men who were yelling gay slurs. He was not seriously hurt.
On May 5, another gay Brooklyn couple was allegedly knocked to the ground by four men emerging from a New York Knicks game at Madison Square Garden. The alleged culprits shouted anti-gay slurs at the pair in broad daylight, according to the report.
Two 21-year-old suspects, Asllan Berisha and Brian Ramirez, have since been arrested and charged with gang assault and assault as a hate crime in connection with yet another alleged anti-gay attack this month, according to the Post.
Terrifying. New Yorkers, I hate having to say this, but please be safe.
I work 35hrs a week, I go to school full time, I just received 2 acceptance letters to some of the schools that I applied to in Canada (still waiting to hear from the rest before I make my decision), I made the elite President’s List at school… yup, life is good! =D
It has been really tough for the past 3 years… but now I see the light at the end of the tunnel jajajaja nothing and no one will hold me from achieving my dreams.
